ON A BLACK HORSE

 Claudia Lapp

On a black horse
with moon-shaped hooves
blowing a green glass trumpet
he came
on the tide of dream debris
blowing with no sound

then came phrases
sheening like ribbons
which I couldn’t catch
and green glass arabesques
from the dark one’s trumpet
and the delicious beat
of hooves on sand I couldn’t resist

Understand that
when the dark one comes
blowing the sea green conch
past drops away
and I follow
