Straight Shooter

John McAuley

At Dunn’s Restaurant over a bowl of borscht &
sour cream we act like travellers with an eye on history
having seen gold on the corners of Ste-Catherine St.
We discuss how fads & trends seem
to have carried away entire neighbourhoods
drowning the world in an electricity of commerce &
how the girls appear fire-engine brighter than ladies elsewhere.
We wonder what is behind this eldorado of opportunity?
Is it the shrine & its role as interstellar terminus?
Is it the mafia or the expense of maintaining stylish shadows?
We agree the city provides anything for a price.
